ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Idukki, celebrated World Soil Day on December 5, 2024, with the theme "Caring for Soil: Measure, Monitor, and Manage." The event brought together 129 participants, including farmers, agricultural enthusiasts, and officials, who recognized the importance of soil health for sustainable farming. The program commenced with an inaugural session that highlighted the critical role of monitoring soil quality and adopting sustainable management practices to ensure long-term productivity and environmental conservation. The theme resonated strongly with the audience, emphasizing the need for precise and informed actions to protect this vital resource. The celebration featured an insightful session on "Soil Health Management" led by Ms. Manju Varghese, Subject Matter Specialist in Soil Science. She discussed practical strategies for soil testing, interpreting results, and implementing corrective measures to address nutrient imbalances and degradation. The session emphasized the use of organic amendments, crop rotation, and cover crops to improve soil health sustainably. Participants actively engaged in a Q&A session, sharing their experiences and seeking advice on tackling soil-related challenges, underscoring the success of the event in spreading awareness and promoting actionable solutions for soil care.
